Toxic Minerals
Not all minerals are good for the body, in fact some are quite deadly.
In small amounts they might not be too harmful, but they can build up
in your system to toxic levels.
Mineral: Lead
Rich Food Sources: Non-food sources include car exhaust, cigarettes,
lead-based paint.
Action: Toxic symptoms include depression, irritability, apathy, confusion,
hyperactivity, behaviour problems in children, digestive disorders, nausea,
loss of appetite, muscle weakness, insomnia.
Mineral: Mercury
Rich Food Sources: Large fish (e.g. tuna). Non-food sources include pesticides,
fungicides, some paints.
Action: Mercury poisoning usually due to occupational exposure. Symptoms
include tingling sensations, headaches, fatigue, visual, hearing and speech
defects, forgetfulness.
Mineral: Cadmium
Rich Food Sources: Refined and canned foods. Non-food sources include
cigarettes, detergents, fertilisers.
Action: Toxic symptoms include hypertension, hardening of the arteries,
strokes, kidney or liver damage. Cadmium can be stored in the body over
years of exposure.
Mineral: Arsenic
Rich Food Sources: Some table salts, some beers and wines. Non-food sources
include pesticides, some dyes and paints.
Action: High arsenic levels uncommon since it is easily excreted from
the body. High level symptoms, however, include nausea, poor wound healing,
sore throats, loss of hair and nails.
Mineral: Aluminium
Rich Food Sources: Some table salts and processed cheeses. Non-food sources
include aluminium cookware and foil, toothpaste, cigarette filters.
Action: Possible signs of high amounts: gastrointestinal irritation,
rickets, psoriasis.
